THE GREYTHORN CONSERVATORY

Nine centuries of magic, and nine centuries of secrets. Win your Standing, choose your House, decide how much you dare to know.

⏵ THE WORLD

What's this realm about?

The Greythorn Conservatory has taught magic for nine hundred years, and it has kept its secrets for every one of them. The most gifted young magicians in the world compete here for Standing - the favour of the faculty, the admiration of their House, the right to belong at all.

Study by candlelight, duel in the old Hall, trade barbs with rivals in cold stone corridors - while the creeping sense grows that the school itself keeps something old and hungry under the ivy. Ambition, rivalry, forbidden knowledge, and the courage to chase a buried truth.

TONEMoody, romantic, and sharp - never bleak. The stakes are real: a duel can leave a mark, expulsion ends everything, and forbidden knowledge does not let go of those who reach for it. But the heart of the realm is ambition, rivalry, belonging, and the thrill of being clever in a place that rewards it. Celebrate the friendships forged over midnight study, the rivalries that sharpen both sides, and the courage to chase a truth the faculty buried. Atmospheric and intense, suitable for teen and YA readers.
◆ THE PARTY

Choose your role.

The Prodigy

Beginner

Magic came to you the way breathing comes to other people. You were casting circles around your tutors before you could spell the words for them - and the Conservatory took notice. The trouble with being the most gifted student in the room is that you have never had to learn how to lose.

The Archivist

Intermediate

Other students learn the spells they are given. You learn the ones they were not - the marginalia, the redacted chapters, the books shelved behind a lock. Knowledge is the only power that compounds, and you intend to compound a great deal of it before anyone notices how much you know.

The Legacy

Intermediate

Your name is carved into the Conservatory's walls - three centuries of it, in gold leaf, above the door of the House your family helped found. You did not arrive here as a stranger. You arrived as an heir, and the school has expectations, and so does the family, and so, increasingly, do you.

The Scholarship Student

Beginner

You did not inherit your place at Greythorn - you earned it, against a selection committee that did not expect you and a school that has never quite let you forget it. You have no family name, no heirloom wand, no allowance. What you have is everything the comfortable students never needed - resourcefulness, nerve, and a very long memory for being underestimated.

The Duelist

Intermediate

The Duelling Hall is the only classroom that ever made sense to you. Spell against spell, footwork and timing and nerve, a hundred students in the gallery and one rival across the chalked circle - that is where you are fluent. You did not come to Greythorn to read. You came to win, in front of everyone, again.

The Hedge-Witch

Intermediate

Your magic was not taught in any lecture hall. It came from a grandmother, a kitchen, a hedgerow, and a tradition older than the Conservatory's nine hundred years - the folk craft the faculty sniff at and call unsanctioned. You came to Greythorn to learn what they know. You did not come to forget what you already do.

⚑ THE PLAYERS

Factions in motion.

House Auremont

The oldest and proudest of Greythorn's Houses, founded by the Conservatory's first gold-leaf names and never once allowed to forget it. Auremont prizes tradition, lineage, and the quiet certainty that things have always been done a certain way because that way is correct. Its students inherit Standing the way they inherit wands and grudges. To wear Auremont's colours is to carry three centuries of expectation - and to have three centuries of connection at your back when you need a door opened.. Lawful, and convinced that is the same as good.

House Vesper

The House of ambition unbound by patience. Where Auremont inherits its Standing, Vesper intends to take it - by talent, by cunning, by being cleverer and hungrier and less sentimental than anyone willing to wait their turn. Vesper students are brilliant, competitive, and unafraid of an unorthodox advantage. The House is not cruel, exactly; it simply believes the brightest should rise, and arranges, relentlessly, to be the brightest. It is the House most willing to ask what the faculty are hiding.. Ambitious neutral.

The Midnight Circle

A secret society that has met by candlelight beneath the Conservatory for longer than the faculty would believe and exactly as long as they fear. The Circle exists for one purpose: to learn what Greythorn refuses to teach. Its members - drawn from every House, sworn to one another over the rest - chase the redacted pages, the sealed wing, the truth buried under the school. They are not villains. They are the students who decided that a locked door is a question, and that the faculty's silence is an answer worth digging for.. Chaotic, in pursuit of the truth.

The Provost's Office

The faculty and the authority - the Provost, the senior masters, the prefects who keep their order, and the long institutional weight of nine hundred years of rules. The Office decides who is admitted, who is ranked, who is expelled, and what is never spoken of. Most of its members genuinely believe in the Conservatory and in protecting its students. But the Office is also the keeper of the school's oldest secret, and it has decided, again and again across the centuries, that some things are safer buried than taught.. Lawful, and certain its secrets are kindnesses.
